Ewan Lacey is a wine writer and drinks expert. Deeply passionate about finding the story behind the wine and explaining this in a way that’s easy to understand; Ewan is driven to make wine accessible to anyone who wants to know about it and believes that, somewhere out there, there is a wine for everyone.
Ewan writes regularly for the Sunday Mirror on Food & Wine as well as being a resident wine and drinks expert on The Gaby Roslin Show for BBC London radio and on Channel 4’s The Cookery School with Richard Corrigan and Gizzi Erskine, and Weekend Kitchen with Waitrose on Channel 4.
He also hosts wine tastings at events such as the BBC Good Food Show and Ideal Home Show, and he was wine expert at The Harvest Festival on Jimmy Doherty’s farm and drinks buyer for Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts event company.
Ewan’s deep rooted interest in the drinks business dates back to the end of his school days when he dabbled in making his own beer. This, however, proved only to be a phase – put to an end when his home brew kit exploded all over his bedroom wardrobe! Whilst studying for his law degree, Ewan worked in restaurants and bars in Mexico, Israel, Austria, Denmark and Scotland, and during his time working as a cocktail barman in Copenhagen’s busiest bar, Ewan learnt to train his palate as he invented new takes on classic drinks.
He moved from Scotland to London and embarked on a career running restaurants in the West End. Throughout this period, his interest in wine deepened and a career in the London Wine Trade beckoned. Working as a consultant wine buyer, he has developed wine lists and trained sommeliers for some of London’s top restaurants and best hotels.
When not filming or writing, Ewan loves to bring wine to a live audience – whether they are wine trade professionals, corporate clients, or ordinary people who want to try something new. He hosts wine courses which are always fun, informative and relaxed and has designed a range of wine tasting events that are tailored to make any occasion special. He loves working with top celebrity chefs, whether designing and delivering great food and wine matching events, or hosting themed dinners.
Ewan is also a dynamic after dinner speaker and an accomplished awards ceremony host. He is General Manager for the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) and hosts events for Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB).
